The South Lamar Street Improvements Project in Dallas, Texas, is the recent recipient of the Envision Bronze Award for sustainable infrastructure. The project is located on a half-mile stretch of Lamar Street, which lies between a historic African American neighborhood and an industrial area with several metal recycling facilities. The project is delivering environmental, social, and economic benefits to the community by transforming Lamar Street from an industrial corridor to a walkable main street. To assist in the revitalization of the area, the project engineers and landscape architects incorporated many context-sensitive and low-impact design solutions, including shared bike lanes, pedestrian trails, transit amenities, energy-efficient lighting, and recycled materials.
