Credential Maintenance

Once earned, the ENV SP credential is valid for one year. To maintain an active ENV SP status and stay at the forefront of sustainable practice, annual credential maintenance is required:

- Complete 7 hours of continuing education each year
  - 2 hours are prescribed by ISI
  - 5 hours are electives (ISI-approved courses or activities)
- Submit your annual renewal fee

If annual credential maintenance requirements aren’t met, the credential becomes inactive. Inactive ENV SPs have a six month grace period to catch up on credential maintenance requirements before the credential officially expires. Expired ENV SPs can no longer use the ENV SP designation professionally and are not eligible for renewal — they must re-take the exam to re-earn the credential.

How to Earn Your ENV SP Credential

Becoming an ENV SP involves a combination of education and assessment:

Account: Create a free ISI user account to access our tools and trainings.
Training: Complete the official ENV SP training — offered as a self-paced online course or via live virtual or in-person workshops — where you’ll explore the Envision framework and learn how to assess sustainability across infrastructure project lifecycles.
Exam: After training, you’ll take the virtual ENV SP exam consisting of 75 multiple-choice questions based on the Envision Guidance Manual. A minimum score of 75% is required to successfully earn your ENV SP credential.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is credential maintenance required?

Yes, credential maintenance is required. The ENV SP credential will expire unless you participate in credential maintenance. The credentials have a one-year expiration period and must be maintained annually to remain active. The only exception is during your first year as a credentialed ENV SP; you do not have to report credential maintenance hours to ISI for your first year.

What are prescribed hours?

Each year, ISI publishes at least two hours of online courses that are prescribed for all ENV SPs to complete. These are automatically loaded into ENV SPs’ accounts upon renewal, and they can be found by navigating to Education, then “My Courses”. You can filter for your prescribed courses.

How can users complete the additional elective courses?

The five additional elective hours can be completed in a number of ways. ISI continuing education courses are available on the ISI website, in the “All Courses” library of your ISI account. When completed, they will be automatically tracked on the continuing education progress bar. Beyond these courses, additional elective hours may be self-reported through your ISI account.

What is a self-reported hour?

ISI understands ENV SPs earn credential maintenance hours in a variety of ways and may wish to have them counted towards their ENV SP credential. ISI accepts credential maintenance hours that are tied to both infrastructure and sustainability. Acceptable hours include outside coursework, attendance at conferences, authoring articles on Envision and sustainable infrastructure, ISI committees or workgroups, or organizational quarterly meetings.

How do I submit my self-reported hours?

ENV SPs should use the self-report form accessible via their accounts to track and submit their self-reported education hours. With the exception of the “course code” field, all fields on the self-report form are required for approval, including supplemental PDF documentation that supports the self-reported activity. All self-reported hours are subject to ISI review and will be marked “pending” until approved. The review can take 2-4 weeks.

I worked on a project team that submitted a project for verification. Does this count towards my credential maintenance hours?

Yes. Hours spent working on Envision projects or utilizing the Envision checklist can be self-reported via the self-report hours button on your dashboard. You can enter the numbers of hours worked on the project up to the maximum of five elective hours required per year. This is done through the self-report function and will require a PDF document uploaded to indicate involvement on a project. If your project has been submitted for verification and is in ‘first review’ or further in the process, you can submit for your prescribed hours. I know I should be renewing, but why don’t I see the renew option on my dashboard?

Please confirm that you have completed all your required credential maintenance for the year prior. If the progress bar on your dashboard shows anything less than seven total hours, your hours are not complete. Once these hours are submitted and you are within your allowed date range to renew, the option will automatically appear on your dashboard.

Can the ENV SP designation still be used without credential maintenance?

No, the ENV SP designation should not be used if the professional is not actively maintaining the credential. With the implementation of the credential maintenance program, ENV SPs who elect not to maintain their credential will lose the designation.
